#2: Educate the Family about the Pillars of Business Family Professionalization
Business families benefit from professionalizing certain processes and structures over time–but they are well-advised to carefully weigh the benefits of formalization with the potential downsides, as the efficacy of professionalization efforts depends on various characteristics of the owning family, such as the level of
cohesion and commitment, or the presence (or absence) of a unifying goal and a shared set of values. While some families will likely benefit from certain elements of professionalization, others do just fine with little or even no formalization at all.
Professional business dynasties have learned that professionalization goes beyond formalization, and effectively rests on five pillars: 1) a solid foundation of shared values and goals; 2) psychological glue that ties the family to one another and to the business; 3) the competence-based ability to make sound decisions that benefit the family and the business; 4) the informal, value-based behavioral norms; and lastly, 5) the formal structures and processes that support managing the family relationships, and the family-business interface.
In order to successfully professionalize the family–in a way that conforms with the family’s culture and values – it is essential to develop these layers progressively, and from the bottom up (starting with values and goals). Starting top-down is a dangerous yet frequently utilized approach that is driven by the idea that structures are the key to solving emotional issues when in reality, they often aggravate them.

#3: Encourage Systematic Competence Development
Regardless of whether or not family members have operational roles in the business–if they want to be professional owners, it should be a prerequisite for family members to educate themselves to be knowledgeable about the business and understanding of the family’s values and goals as well as the dominant dynamics shaping their family interactions.
Few families systematically and strategically invest time and money to develop a long-term plan for ownership development. Professional families that prioritize ownership education provide adequate resources for ownership competence development on both an individual and family level and organize, support, and encourage activities that allow individuals and the family as a whole to acquire and strengthen critical competences.
Understanding specifically which competences a family possesses allows the ownership group to systematically enhance missing competences either by developing them internally, or by inviting outside experience (e.g., advisors, non-family board members) to complement their family-level ownership competence. A family that has an ownership competence development strategy has one critical advantage: It makes expectations and requirements consistent and transparent for all family members, which reduces conflict.
Systematic ownership competence development could be overseen by a (possibly interbranch and intergenerational) ownership competence committee (OCC), chaired by a chosen family ownership competence advocate. The OCC is tasked with developing a systematic ownership competence development strategy for the family, detailing aspects such as the goals of their activities, the roles affected by it (i.e.,
who should be assessed and possibly educated), do we have an inclusive (e.g., in-laws) or exclusive understanding (e.g., only family members working in the business of ownership competence development), a timeline, and resource (time, money, emotion) requirements.
Based on the strategy, the OCC identifies–based on their core values, goals, and family and business roles– the competences that it deemed essential for competent, sustainable ownership (i.e., through interviews with current and past role owners). The result of this process is a list with first order competence (e.g., business acumen) and second order competence (e.g., financial knowledge) categories.
Based on this list, a subsequent list of measurement items is created (see Appendix H for exemplary questions) that allows for the assessment of a person’s level of mastery in each competence. There is no doubt about it–the list of questions will be extensive, and the process of deriving these items will be time- consuming.
Lastly, individual family members are assessed–this could be a combination of self-assessment and an assessment by a third party closely familiar with the individual’s role and competences, results are shared, and a systematic ownership competence development plan for the group as a whole, as well as for the individual owners, is developed.

Figure 9 above is an exemplary visualization of what such an ownership group competence profile might look like–this matrix is something that should be developed with the family.
Once the competence landscape has been assessed, the task at hand is to collaborate with the family to develop an ownership competence development plan, which also details different ways of acquiring those competences that are still lacking (for a comprehensive overview of internal and external ways to acquire different ownership competences, see Appendix H). Options include formal education (e.g., university programs such as (Executive) MBA’s for business family members, ownership competence, as well as governance seminars and family dynamics courses), informal exchanges with peers (this could
be institutionalized, e.g., through Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) meetings or roundtables of local/ regional business families), or mentoring (see Appendix H for a complete overview). While there are many ways in which ownership competences can be acquired, the best way for your client depends on the type and the level of competence needed, the timeframe, and aspects such as current and future role requirements.
It is our belief that a more inclusive approach is more beneficial for most families, which is why we suggest that the plan ideally includes all family members, whether they are current or future shareholders (i.e., children of all ages) or not (e.g., in-laws). And while we have highlighted this point many times throughout the report, this process, too, can be leveraged to the benefit of the family, if we refuse to treat it as a mere means to an end. The process can be an incredibly powerful tool in unifying the family. When family members feel that they are given a voice, when they feel engaged and emotionally committed, they are able to safely express their opinions and feelings. This creates mutual trust.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
We cannot stress enough the importance of proactively developing competence among any ownership group, but we would be naïve to ignore the many difficulties that families and advisors might face as they take on this endeavor. Here are some potential obstacles that should be acknowledged – and better, addressed – before embarking on this journey:
Admitting Weakness:
The tricky part about the ownership competency assessment–maybe trickier than figuring out which competences should be assessed–is the fact that family members may feel threatened by the prospect of being “evaluated” by their fellow family members. They may feel embarrassed, knowing that they have certain shortcomings, which may cause them to dismiss or heavily criticize the process. Both an ownership competence development advocate and an advisor who is sensitive and knowledgeable about these dynamics can help mitigate these issues, as can making the process (of course!) voluntary, and not disclosing results on an individual level.
Building an Inventory of Competences:
Given the resource constraints that many–particularly smaller– families face, it is not surprising that building an inventory of competences is not a top priority for many, what good is it to prepare people for ownership when they are 20 years away from any role in the family and the business? However, considering that most families have a rather long-term vision–20, 30 years not being an exception–for their business, it seems shortsighted that they would not apply the same criteria for preparing their ownership group for success.
Resource Constraints:
Everyone is busy, and family members that do not have an operational role are usually working outside the company or taking care of their own families. Time is limited, and this is an issue that is particularly difficult for family members that do not have a formal role in the family or the business. How can they justify wanting to be educated, if they are currently not even doing anything? This limited perception of adding value through formal roles only needs to be overcome by developing a more inclusive understanding of the different formal and non-formal roles through which family members can add value.
Piecemeal Process:
This last one is a major constraint: there are very few programs for family business owners that allow them to systematically develop these competences. Instead, families have to follow a piecemeal approach of internal and external measures, internships, mentoring, formal education, and informal best practice groups to educate their owners. For a family that is large enough to justify this, a great alternative could be to develop their own ownership academy, specifically designed to educate family members of all different ages for different roles in the family and the business.
8 OUTLOOK
Emotional challenges usually cannot be solved with structural solutions. However, in our everyday interactions with family businesses in the US, France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland, this is exactly what we observe leaders trying to accomplish. In an attempt to professionalize the family alongside the business, owning families are encouraged to put in place policies, processes, and structures that are aimed at avoiding or mitigating conflict. In reality, we find that these (often generic) solutions often have a detrimental effect on family dynamics and the relationship between the family and the business, and do not allow the family to harness its full potential to the benefit of the business. During our interviews, many families and experts voiced concerns over families being pushed to over professionalize, or to purchase “off-the-rack” solutions that turned out to be meaningless to them, which indicates a slight disconnect between what some advisors think benefits families the most, and what families think they need and want.
Many family business owners and family business advisors understand that formalized structural solutions are not what makes a business family ‘professional.’ It is rather the family members’ individual as well as the family’s collective ownership competences as well as their commitment to the family and business that drive the family to behave in the best interest of both the business and their family for the long term. Our data supports the assertion that families actually need less formalized structure, but more systematic and structured (as in, advisor-facilitated, goal oriented), informal efforts to bring the family closer together–since family members are not likely to commit to formalized structures and processes that they do not feel emotionally connected with anyway. As advisors, we therefore need to think twice about imposing rigid structures as it may have negative effects on both current and future generations of the family.
We need to encourage business families to increase awareness and willingness among their family members to engage in this journey, which may be difficult and painful, but it can be navigated, especially with the help of a trusted advisor that can navigate through these waters. Forward-looking business families make sure the next generation of owners is being raised as responsible and competent owners. They allocate sufficient resources to educating the next generation, and they provide age-appropriate learning opportunities to acquire these competences. They let their children fail and suffer age-appropriate consequences, and they prioritize ownership responsibilities over ownership rights. They raise their next generation to be responsible stewards of a prospering business, and valuable members of a functional ownership group.
“Families are well aware of the importance of systematically developing ownership competence, but their efforts often fall short. This may seem surprising, given that most people are eager to learn in their professional career–but they are not when it comes to their ownership role. In my experience, family members have a hard time admitting
weaknesses–especially among other family members–and families are reluctant to learn anything before it is needed. My feeling is that they wrongly consider it a waste of precious resources to build competence before they actually put them to work.”

APPENDIX C: DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS
Qualitative Data Collection & Analysis
We conducted interviews with family business advisors and family business board members, and interviews with representatives from business families that have a proven track record of ownership competence development. An overview of the interviewees can be found in Appendices D and E.
Data were collected using a variety of methods, ranging from personal, to phone, to email conversations, as well as written questionnaires. Secondary data were gathered through desk research and included journal and newspaper articles that were available online, as well as (corporate) websites.
We analyzed our data using content analysis software (MAXQDA, Version 18.0.0).
Quantitative Data Collection & Analysis
The survey consisted of four parts. Part I pertained to the participants’ experience regarding their clients’ governance mechanisms. Part II focused on individual as well as collective ownership competences, as well as the best way how to acquire ownership competences. Part III assessed the respondents’ view on the most frequent sources of conflict in business families. Part IV gathered demographic information on the respondents. We then analyzed our data using a variety of statistical tools and software, including STATA (Version 12) for preliminary statistical analysis and Smart PLS (Version 3.2.8) for advanced structural model testing.

"I see a need for basics in Family Business Strategy: Prerequisites for a Niche Strategy, Financing, Profit Distribution, International Expansion, M&A. These "simple" basics are not dealt with at University, and they are neglected in research, too, or if dealt with, mostly the context of SMEs. As the market for shareholder education is dominated by lawyers and family sociologist/ psychologists these topics are not emphasized by the "moderators" either. Also —one of the most underrated competences is the capability to choose the right personalities as Board Advisors or Managers. The average life-time of a non-family executive (President) is 30 months — this is a shame. Sometimes I have the impression that owners are attracted to those individuals that will cause them the most problems — for example the "big shot" from a large public company. " (Kormann, 2019).

ABOUT THE RESEARCH PROJECT: PROFESSIONALIZING THE BUSINESS FAMILY
This applied research project, which was sponsored by 2086 Society and the Family Firm Institute (FFI), investigates the simple question of (which, turns out, is not so simple after all) “what characterizes good owners,” many studies have investigated the issue of professionalizing the family firm, but the question of what the owning family needs to become and remain a qualified ownership group has not been researched systematically.
Business families are often urged by well-meaning outsiders (or even family members) to “professionalize” and “formalize” the family. But what does that mean? With this research, we look beyond what such efforts usually look like in reality: A family constitution, some family protocols, and a range of bodies (e.g., family council) or activities (e.g., family day)–all of which are commendable and sometimes necessary. We focus on what is needed on a deeper level–for the individual family member and the family as a whole–by asking: What competences are needed to become and remain an effective, healthy and qualified business family that adds value to the business and the family? What is needed to ensure that family members remain committed to the family and the business?
For the purpose of this research, we first performed an exhaustive review of the scientific and practice-oriented literatures in both German and English (since much work has been done on the topic of family professionalization and in particular on family strategies in German). We then analyzed existing qualitative and quantitative data (see Appendix B) related to business family professionalization and governance available to the project team, which are based on conversations with over 130 business families and business family advisors from Europe, the United States, Asia, and Latin America the team members had held over the past decade. Based on our findings, we developed a research framework as well as the survey questionnaire. The survey was sent out to a global sample of family business advisors in August of 2019. In addition to the survey, we interviewed several business families with a proven record of family professionalization for the mini case studies, and eight non- family directors to gather their perspectives on ownership competences between June and September of 2019. For more information on data collection and analysis, see Appendix C.

Dr. Claudia Binz Astrachan (Project Lead), Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland. Claudia Astrachan is a researcher and lecturer at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). In her role as the head of the Family & Business program she has been working closely with Swiss family businesses for the last decade. In addition to her role at HSLU, she acts as the head of the governance practice at Keyt Consulting, a US-based family business consulting company. She is a board member of the International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA), and a former chair of the Special Interest Group ‘Family Business Research’ at the European Academy of Management (EURAM). Her scientific contributions have been published in several peer-reviewed journals, and she has co-authored various practice-oriented articles and research reports for the family business community (i.e., on family business branding, longevity, shared leadership).
Prof. Dr. Fabian Bernhard, EDHEC Business School, France. Fabian Bernhard is Associate Professor of Family Business and part of the Family Business Center at EDHEC Business School in Paris. He is a research fellow for family business at the University of Mannheim in Germany and previously at Stetson University in Florida. Equipped with the insights from his own family’s business, he worked several years for a renowned financial consulting company in New York. In his academic work he specializes in the emotional dynamics in family businesses, preparing next generational leaders, and the psychological attachment to the family business. His articles have been published in various academic and practitioner outlets as well as in the public media. He is a recipient of several honors and awards for his work on family businesses, such as the best dissertation honorable mention by FFI. Since 2014 he has been serving on the editorial review boards of the Family Business Review (FBR) and the Journal of Family Business Strategy (JFBS). Since 2017, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of FFI.

Anneleen Michiels is assistant professor of finance and family business at the Research Center for Entrepreneurship and Family firms at Hasselt University in Belgium, where she teaches at the undergraduate, postgraduate and executive levels. #3: Incentivar el desarrollo de la competencia sistémica
Sin importar que los miembros de la familia cumplan roles operacionales en la empresa, si quieren ser propietarios profesionales, tiene que ser un requisito de los miembros de la familia educarse para estar informados acerca de la empresa y entender los valores y objetivos familiares como también las dinámicas dominantes que forman sus interacciones familiares.
Pocas familias invierten tiempo y dinero de manera sistemática y estratégica para desarrollar un plan a largo plazo de desarrollo de la propiedad. Las familias profesionales que priorizan la educación de la propiedad proveen los recursos adecuados para el desarrollo de la competencia de la propiedad en los niveles familiar e individual, y organizan, apoyan e incentivan actividades que permiten a los individuos y a la familia completa a adquirir y fortalecer competencias cruciales.
Entender específicamente qué competencias posee una familia permite al grupo propietario mejorar de manera sistemática las competencias faltantes ya sea desarrollándolas en el interior o invitando una experiencia exterior (ej. asesores, miembros que no son parte del panel familiar) para complementar su competencia de la propiedad a nivel familiar. Una familia que tiene una estrategia de desarrollo de competencia de la propiedad tiene una ventaja crucial: hace de las expectativas y requerimientos consistentes y transparentes para todos los miembros familiares, lo cual reduce el conflicto.
El desarrollo de la competencia de la propiedad sistémico puede ser supervisado por un comité de competencia de la propiedad (CCP) (en lo posible inter ramal e intergeneracional), presidido por un abogado de la competencia de la propiedad que sea elegido por la familia. La tarea del CCP es desarrollar una estrategia de desarrollo de la competencia de la propiedad sistemática para la familia, detallando aspectos como los objetivos de sus actividades, los roles que se ven afectados (ej. quién debería ser asesorado y educado), si se tiene un entendimiento inclusivo (ej. familia política) o exclusivo (ej. solo miembros familiares trabajando en el desarrollo de la competencia de la propiedad), una línea de tiempo y requerimientos de recursos (tiempo, dinero, motivación).
Basado en la estrategia, el CCP identifica (basado en los valores, objetivos, y roles familiares y de negocio principales) las competencias que consideran esenciales para una propiedad competente y sostenible (ej. con entrevistas con los roles propietarios previos y actuales). El resultado de este proceso es una lista con categorías de competencias de primer orden (ej. visión empresarial) y competencias de segundo orden (ej. conocimiento financiero).
Basados en esta lista, se crea una lista posterior de objetos de medición (ver apéndice H para preguntas de ejemplo) que permite la evaluación del nivel de dominio de las personas en cada competencia. No cabe dudas, la lista de preguntas será extensa y el proceso de deducción de estos objetos consumirá el tiempo.
Finalmente, los miembros de la familia individuales son evaluados. Esto puede ser una combinación de una evaluación propia o por un tercero que conozca el rol y competencias del individuo. Los resultados se comparten. Y se desarrolla un plan de desarrollo de competencia de la propiedad sistémico para el grupo completo, y para los propietarios individuales.

La figura 9 es una visualización de ejemplo de cómo se debería ver un perfil de competencias del grupo de la propiedad. Está matriz debería ser desarrollada con la familia.
Una vez que se ha evaluado el panorama de las competencias, la tarea es colaborar con la familia para desarrollar un plan de desarrollo de competencia de la propiedad, que también detalla diferentes maneras de adquirir las competencias que faltan (ver apéndice H para un resumen comprensivo de las maneras internas y externas para adquirir competencias de la propiedad diferentes). Las opciones incluyen una educación formalizada (ej. programas universitarios como MBA ejecutivo
para miembros de la familia empresarial, competencia de la propiedad, como también seminarios de gobierno y cursos de las dinámicas familiares), intercambios informales entre pares (esto puede ser institucionalizado ej. a través de reuniones de la organización de presidentes jóvenes (YPO) o conferencias con las familias empresariales locales y regionales), o por mentoría (ver apéndice H para un resumen completo). Aunque hay varias maneras para la adquisición de competencias de la propiedad, la mejor manera para su cliente depende del tipo y el nivel de la competencia necesarios, el periodo de tiempo y aspectos como los requerimientos de roles actuales y futuros.
Creemos que un enfoque más inclusivo es más beneficioso para la mayoría de familias, por lo que sugerimos que el plan idealmente incluya a todos los miembros familiares, aún si son accionistas actuales o futuros (ej. los hijos de todas las edades) o no (ej. familia política). Y aunque hemos resaltado este punto varias veces a lo largo del reporte, este proceso también puede ser usado para el beneficio de la familia, si nos rehusamos a tratarlo como un simple método con un propósito. Este proceso puede ser una herramienta increíblemente poderosa para unificar a la familia. Cuando los miembros familiares sienten que se les dio una voz, cuando se sienten comprometidos emocionalmente, son capaces de expresar con seguridad sus opiniones y sentimientos. Esto crea confianza mutua.

No podemos enfatizar lo suficiente lo importante que es desarrollar proactivamente las competencias dentro de cualquier grupo propietario, pero sería ingenuo ignorar las tantas dificultades que las familias y los asesores podrían enfrentar al tomar este empeño. Aquí hay algunos obstáculos potenciales que se debería considerar (y mejor abordar), antes de empezar esta travesía:
Admitir debilidades
Una parte complicada acerca de la evaluación de la competencia de la propiedad (incluso más complejo que descubrir qué competencias deben ser evaluadas) es el hecho que los miembros de la familia pueden sentirse amenazados bajo la posibilidad de ser evaluados por sus miembros familiares colegas. Pueden sentirse avergonzados al saber que tienen ciertos defectos, lo que puede causar que rechacen o critiquen fuertemente el proceso. Tanto un asesor que conozca estas dinámicas como un abogado del desarrollo de la competencia de la propiedad puede ayudar a mitigar estos problemas, como también hacer del proceso (¡por supuesto!) algo voluntario y no revelar los resultados a un nivel individual.
Construir un inventario de competencias:
Dadas las limitaciones de recursos a las que se enfrentan muchas familias (especialmente las pequeñas), no sorprende que construir un inventario de competencias no sea una prioridad para muchos. ¿De qué sirve preparar a las personas para ser propietarios si están a 20 años de cualquier rol en la familia y la empresa? Sin embargo, considerando que la mayoría de las familias tienen una visión a largo plazo (20 o 30 años no serían una excepción) para su empresa, parecería cortoplacista que no aplicaran los mismos criterios para preparar a su grupo propietario para el éxito.
Limitaciones de recursos:
Todos están ocupados, y los miembros de la familia que no cumplen un rol operacional usualmente están trabajando fuera de la empresa o cuidando a sus propias familias. El tiempo es limitado, y esto es un problema que es difícil en particular para los miembros de la familia que no cumplen un rol formal dentro de ella o en la empresa. ¿Cómo se puede justificar el querer ser educados si en la actualidad no hacen nada? Esta concepción limitada de añadir valor a través de los roles formales solo necesita superarse desarrollando un entendimiento más inclusivo de los diferentes roles formales e informales a los que la familia puede añadir valor.
Proceso fragmentado:
Este último es una limitación más importante: hay muy pocos programas para los propietarios de la empresa familiar que les permitan sistemáticamente desarrollar estas competencias. En vez de eso, las familias tienen que seguir un enfoque fragmentado con medidas externas e internas, prácticas, mentoría, educación formal y grupos informales de las mejores prácticas para educar a sus propietarios. Para una familia que es lo suficientemente grande para justificar esto, una gran alternativa puede ser desarrollar su propia academia de propietarios, diseñada en específico para educar a los miembros de la familia de todas las edades para diferentes roles dentro de la familia y la empresa.
8 PRONÓSTICO
Los desafíos emocionales usualmente no se pueden resolver con soluciones estructurales. Sin embargo, en nuestras interacciones diarias con empresas familiares en EE. UU., Francia, Bélgica, Alemania y Suiza, esto es exactamente lo que observamos que los líderes intentan lograr. En un intento de profesionalizar a la familia junto con la empresa, se incentiva a las familias propietarias a poner en práctica políticas, procesos y estructuras cuyo objetivo es evitar o mitigar el conflicto. En realidad, encontramos que estas soluciones (usualmente genéricas) suelen tener un efecto perjudicial para las dinámicas de la familia y la relación entre la familia y la empresa, y no permiten que la familia aproveche su máximo potencial para el beneficio de la empresa. Durante nuestras entrevistas, muchas familias y expertos comentaron sus preocupaciones sobre cómo se les está exigiendo a las familias a profesionalizarse de más o a adquirir soluciones “listas para ser usadas” que terminaron siendo sinsentido para ellos, lo que indica una leve desconexión entro lo que algunos asesores creen que beneficia más a las familias y lo que las familias piensan que necesitan y desean.
Muchos propietarios y asesores de la empresa familiar entienden que las soluciones estructurales formalizadas no son lo que hace “profesional” a la empresa familiar. En realidad, son las competencias de la propiedad colectivas e individuales de los miembros de la familia como también su compromiso con ella y con la empresa lo que conduce a la familia a comportarse en beneficio de tanto la familia como de la empresa en el largo plazo. Nuestra información apoya la afirmación de que las familias en realidad necesitan menos estructuras formalizadas y más esfuerzos informales sistemáticos y estructurados (como en orientación de objetivos y asesoría) para unir a la familia, ya que los miembros familiares no suelen comprometerse a estructuras y procesos formalizados que de todas maneras no se sienten conectados emocionalmente. Como asesores, tenemos entonces que pensar dos veces acerca de imponer estructuras rígidas ya que pueden resultar en efectos negativos para las generaciones actuales y futuras de la familia.
Tenemos que incentivar a las familias empresariales a incrementar su conocimiento y voluntad entre los miembros de la familia para comprometerse con esta travesía, lo cual puede ser difícil y doloroso, pero puede ser navegado, en especial con la ayuda de un asesor que pueda navegar por estas aguas. Las familias empresariales visionarias se aseguran que la siguiente generación de propietarios sea educada como propietarios responsables y competentes. Distribuyen los recursos suficientes para educar a la siguiente generación y proveen oportunidades de aprendizaje de acuerdo a las edades para adquirir estas competencias. Permiten a sus hijos equivocarse y sufrir las consecuencias (acorde a su edad) y priorizan las responsabilidades de la propiedad antes que los derechos de propiedad. Educan a la siguiente generación para ser administradores responsables de una empresa próspera y miembros valiosos de un grupo de propietarios funcional.
“Las familias son muy conscientes de la importancia de desarrollar sistemáticamente una competencia de la propiedad, pero sus esfuerzos suelen quedarse cortos. Esto puede parecer sorprendente, ya que la mayoría de las personas están entusiasmadas por aprender en su carrera profesional, pero no lo están cuando nos referimos a su rol de propiedad. En mi experiencia, a los miembros de la familia se les dificulta admitir debilidades (en especial entre otros miembros familiares) y las familias se rehúsan a aprender cualquier cosa antes de que sea necesaria. Mi presentimiento es que lo consideran erróneamente como un desperdicio de recursos preciados el construir una competencia antes de que ponerla a funcionar.” (Rüsen, 2019)

Recolección y análisis de datos cualitativos:
Dirigimos entrevistas con asesores de la empresa familiar y miembros del panel de la empresa familiar, y entrevistas con representantes de familias empresariales que han demostrado trayectoria del desarrollo de la competencia de la propiedad. Un resumen de los entrevistados puede encontrarse en los apéndices D y E.
Los datos fueron recolectados utilizando una variedad de métodos, desde métodos personales hasta llamadas, conversaciones por correo electrónico, como también cuestionarios escritos. Los datos secundarios se reunieron a través de la investigación de escritorio e incluían artículos de periódico y diario que estaban disponibles en línea y sitios web (corporativos).
Analizamos nuestros datos utilizando un programa de análisis de contenido (MAXQDA, Versión 18.0.0).
Recolección y análisis de datos cuantitativos:
La encuesta consistió de cuatro partes. La parte I pertenecía a la experiencia de los participantes respecto a los mecanismos de gobierno de sus clientes. La parte II se enfocó en competencias de la propiedad colectivas e individuales, como también en el mejor camino para adquirir las competencias de la propiedad. La parte III evaluó la mirada de los encuestados sobre las fuentes de conflicto más frecuentes en las familias empresariales. La parte IV reunió información demográfica de los encuestados. Luego analizamos nuestros datos utilizando una variedad de herramientas y programas estadísticos, incluyendo STATA (Versión 12) para análisis estadísticos preliminares y Smart PLS (Versión 3.2.8) para testeo avanzado de modelos estructurales.

PROYECTO, AUTORÍA Y AGRADECIMIENTOS
ACERCA DEL PROYECTO DE INVESTIGACIÓN: PROFESIONALIZANDO A LA FAMILIA EMPRESARIAL
Este proyecto de investigación aplicado, el cual fue patrocinado por 2086 Society y el Family Firm Institute (FFI), examina la simple pregunta (que, al parecer, no es nada simple) “qué caracteriza a los buenos propietarios”. Muchos estudios han investigado el asunto de profesionalizar a la agencia familiar, pero no se ha investigado sistemáticamente la pregunta de en qué se debe convertir la familia propietaria y cómo mantenerse un grupo de propietarios calificados.
Las familias empresariales suelen ser alentadas por terceros con buenas intenciones (o incluso por miembros familiares) para “profesionalizar” y “formalizar” a la familia.
¿Pero qué significa eso? Con esta investigación, vemos más allá de lo que esos esfuerzos suelen verse en la realidad: una constitución familiar, algunos protocolos familiares, y una variedad de organismos (ej. consejo familiar) o actividades (ej. día familiar), de los cuales todos son admirables y a veces necesarios. Nos concentramos en lo que es necesario a un nivel más profundo, para el miembro familiar individual y la familia como un todo, preguntándonos: ¿qué competencias son necesarias para convertirse y mantenerse como una familia empresarial calificada, saludable y efectiva que añade valores a la empresa y a la familia? ¿Qué se necesita para asegurar que los miembros familiares se mantengan comprometidos con la familia y la empresa?
Para cumplir los objetivos de esta investigación, realizamos primero una revisión exhaustiva de las literaturas científicas y orientadas a la práctica tanto en alemán como en inglés (ya que la mayoría del trabajo referido a la profesionalización familiar y en particular a las estrategias familiares se ha hecho en alemán). Luego analizamos los datos cualitativos y cuantitativos (ver Apéndice B) existentes relacionados con la profesionalización de la familia empresarial y gobierno disponibles para el equipo del proyecto, que están basados en conversaciones con más de 130 familias empresariales y asesores de la familia empresarial de Europa, EE. UU., Asia, y América Latina, que los miembros del equipo recolectaron en la última década. La encuesta fue enviada a un grupo global de asesores de la empresa familiar en agosto del 2019. Además de la encuesta, entrevistamos a varias familias empresariales con un historial comprobado de profesionalización familiar para los casos de estudio pequeños, y a ocho directores fuera de la familia para reunir sus perspectivas sobre las competencias de propiedad entre junio y septiembre del 2019. 00:03:40:10 and infer the sequences of ancient DNA
that existed billions of years ago.

these ancient DNA molecules
00:03:49:17 and engineer them inside organisms.
00:03:53:02 For the first time,
we are able to activate molecules

00:03:58:12 to understand and capture
what happened back then.

ancient environments in the lab

different planets and moons

and assess their chemistry,

from giving birth to life.

to guide our telescopes in the vast sky

of finding life in the universe.

What can we do with this knowledge?

I'm a dedicated English<>Spanish (Latin America) translator, reviewer, proofreader, and linguist based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I'm a native Spanish speaker who has an advanced level of English (C1), an intermediate level of French (B1), and a basic level of Italian (A1).
I have completed a four-year university program to hold a degree in Sworn, Scientific-Technical, and Literary Translation at Universidad de Belgrano. Even though the program is mainly focused on the translation of legal documents, it additionally trained me to translate texts of medicine, literature, finance, social sciences, technology, art, history, and tourism.
