In-person Sep 28, 2022

I prefer in-person by far, but I’m no longer a frequent flyer and I’m usually too busy with work and family. It was much easier when I was working in-house (travel and accommodation expenses paid, for instance).

In-person definitely. Sep 28, 2022

During in-person events I can actually walk around, explore and chat with people. It is always also a social/touristic/cultural experience.

I don't like online conferences as they are often badly structured, aside from being tethered to the screen. But they are practical and easy to access, which does not mean they are good or useful.

I prefer in-person, always. After all, since the pandemic, I believe everyone is tired of online events and digital screens.

I prefer online events... Sep 28, 2022

over force-majeure events, but I prefer in-person events more. Does this answer the question considering the way it's phrased?

After 20+ years exclusively in-person Sep 28, 2022

I am used to online format and see very little difference nowadays. My case may be unique in a way - after working the ISS program for so long, I know 95% of the faces behind the voices, speakers are often on video and everyone introduces himself on video at least for a few seconds. It's a huge international family, feels like everyone is right here with me:-). It's a huge international family, feels like everyone is right here with me:-). Just 2 hours ago I finished multilateral Program Science Forum simo meeting and loved to see and hear everyone as if we've met again, no matter how hard is the time their presentation subjects give me. But it's sooo interesting! ISS science program is available for public on the net. The only condition is to feed both cats before 5:30 am, give a shot of insulin to Buffy and lock Tyapa in the bedroom, or he'll participate. He has an opinion on everything and is known to some of the space crowd by now but he stays quiet after breakfast for 2-3 hours, whereas good breakfast puts Buffy in a "I don't care" mode and she retires to the balcony.

Considering numerous assignments on site after removal of pandemic restrictions, I satisfy my thirst for in-person communication alright.

Events no longer realistic Sep 29, 2022

In-person events will be more efficient in all possible ways except that online enables double booking of attendance

- but I no longer think it is realistic and, they are not even one-hunderdth worth considering the risk of getting permanent (I repeat, permanent) serious health issue with COVID in addition to several working days lost, expecially when living with a family member that are vulnerable or in more sensitve job like medicare.

Meet up with a friend or find a new business partner in event, got the little tips and tricks, then suddenly locked in bed for 15 days, heavy healthcare bill, and feeling so sick for the rest of the life, shortening the living years - will be justified? If so, How? Considering the healthcare bill and income bill I would rather pay for NOT attending any event !

I attended a couple of conferences online during Covid and while it was nice to see some familiar faces, I found it very hard to concentrate, despite the subject being of great interest to me.
And there's nothing to beat bumping into people in the corridors at an in-person conference, whether it's people you know and love or people you've heard about and would like to meet.

I'm normally a terrible introvert, but if the subject of the conference is interesting enough, I make a huge effort to reach out and talk to whoever. I do have to plan for a couple of days of hibernating afterwards.
